An Interview with Joshua Wyborn
This month we say hello to photographer Joshua Wyborn. Here he shares his passions and treasures.
What sort of work do you specialise in?
I specialise in documentary wedding photography and fine art bridal portraits.
How long have you been a photographer?
Hmmm, that’s a good question… I have played around with my dad’s cameras since I was about 3 years old but my first paying job was when I was 15. It was for a motorbike adventurer Nick Sanders, he started a costal tour of the UK in my hometown and he came across my work and got in touch, from there he asked me to go to several destinations and photograph what I saw, he taught me a lot about business and it was a great buzz. From there I dedicated my work and art to photography, then while at university I started working for the BBC as a photojournalist. That’s where I learnt my Ninja moves I use weekend in weekend out.
How would you describe your style?
Documentary is my style, although I’m trying to push myself more into the posed fine art style portrait. From a guy who initially adored only photographing landscapes, it’s a big deal, but I’m finding a new love in portraiture.
What type of cameras do you shoot with?
Canon 6D DSLR is the current tool. Its low light capabilities really help out in dark churches. It’s also light which allows me to run around like a mad man getting all the weird wonderful angles.
I also have a range of film cameras and at one point only used medium format film cameras, but the demand for speed needs digital, but if you require your wedding all in film I shall do it happily!
What kit can you fit in your fig bag?
I can fit my canon 6D with battery grip, Sigma 24-105 F4 Art lens, Canon 70-200 f4, sigma 105 F2.8 Macro, canon 50mm F1.8, 5 extra batteries, 2 strip light LED’s for ring shots and my 8 32GB SD cards. I’m also about to make room for my new pride and joy the Sigma Art 35mm F1.4 what a lens!
What has been your most memorable wedding and why?
This year? Jodie and Dan, The story that Love wins, is just such a powerful one if you have a dry eye you’ve done well, a true love story! You can see it on my blog.
What is the best thing about your fig bag?
It’s sexy! Honestly, it’s just a beautiful yet practical bag. It’s not a black mass of Yuk I have to hide. Its something that is an extension of me, clients often ask about it. I show up in general to weddings in a 3-piece suit, so having an equally flash bag helps the overall image. Images below are all taken of our Hanborough bag in brown.
A photographer who inspires you?
Cole Thompson. He is the man who made me want to be a photographer. He is a landscape photographer who makes incredible monochrome images. Through emails in my younger days he taught me skills I use today, he taught me how to see a landscape and he taught me to be me. He never looks at others work so he is only influenced by what he sees in the landscape before him. Amazing.
If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be?
Bear Grylls. I just love the outlook he has on life and I’m sure I could learn a few things from him…
What is your favourite Image and why?
I love this image as it was fun but it also showed the caring side Jodie had for Dan while he was ill. This couple have true love, in sickness, and in health, not many couples get to truly say those lines when they get married but these two did. You can see the Image below along with behind the scene shot of how it was captured.
